Following on the success of his series of six fiberglass reliefs, 48 x 48 inches, made between 1965-66 inspired by the famous Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Hamilton produced 20 smaller-scale coloured versions between 1965-76 each measuring 23 3/8 x 23 3/8 inches.
Hamilton wrote of these works: “It was an attempt to mirror the whole activity of architecture in the confines of a four-foot-square panel." Although the shape and size of each relief is the same, their air-sprayed cellulose-lacquer finishes vary considerably: shiny black, black-and-white, or multicolored.”
The gold metal flax version from this series owned by The Mayor Gallery is the only one existing in this colour. Its larger, gold-leafed 48 x 48 inches version is owned by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark.
