The artist often took inspiration from popular figures of her generation, working from press cuttings and had a particular interest in the Kennedy family, and was, like many, particularly affected by the assassinations of JFK in 1963 and five years later of his brother, Robert. ‘Fourplay’ is thought to be based on a photograph by Harry Benson taken at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on 5th June 1968, shortly before the assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, perpetrated his crime. Robert Kennedy is in profile against another ghostly face, a woman in the background looks on anxiously.
