Jan Henderikse loves 'money', not as a means for getting 'rich', but as means for creating art.
"We lived at Chelsea Hotel in New York. A real artists hotel with neighbours like Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin. The lobby was full of art by the people who lived there, including my own coin reliefs. Until one day two young kids ran out of the lobby with my coin relief under their arm! That's when I knew for certain: Money is art, art is money ! "
In the 1968 Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum exhibition Henderikse exhibits a series of coin reliefs under the title: "Jan Henderikse uses common cents".
