Shinkichi Tajiri (b. 1923 Los Angeles, USA – d. 2009 Baarlo, The Netherlands) features in Samurai, an exhibition at the British Museum. Tajiri’s sculptural practice, shaped by his experiences of displacement, war, and post-war reconstruction, brings a powerful modern perspective to the exhibition’s exploration of the samurai ethos. His work bridges Eastern and Western traditions, combining industrial materials with philosophy, Tajiri is relevent within both Japanese and international post-war art histories.
